Tanner Elementary Parking Lot Concrete Overlay
Project Overview
Milis Flatwork delivered an all encompassing project by general contracting the concrete, earthwork, landscaping, signage
and electrical. 68,000-square-foot fiber-reinforced concrete overlay for the Tanner Elementary school in Kaukauna, WI. By
going with concrete it provided a durable, long-term pavement system with minimal operational disruption.
Project Size – 68,000 SF of paving, 600’ of curb & gutter and 2,900 sq ft of sidewalk
Concrete Volume – 1,400+ CY
System – Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Overlay
Location – Kaukauna, WI
The Challenge
The Kaukauna Area School District required major site improvements at one of its elementary schools, prompting a careful evaluation between concrete and asphalt for the new parking and circulation areas. The work was to be done in summer but the building still had to be fully accessible.
The Solution
Through a detailed engineering review, the design team found that an asphalt section would demand nover 20 inches of base material, including 12 inches of breaker run. By contrast, concrete’s superior rigidity allowed for an 8-inch layer of 3⁄4″ crushed stone—significantly reducing base thickness and eliminating the gap in overall construction cost.
Phasing & Operations
With daily users, the project was carefully phased to maintain uninterrupted summer school programs and camps. No
long-term closures were required, and the work was completed on schedule.
Value Delivered
As a result, the Kaukauna School District now benefits from a high-performance, low-maintenance concrete parking lot that will
serve students, staff, and the community for many years to come.
